Passive solar design refers to the use of the sun's energy to heat and cool the living spaces in a home, utilizing the southern exposure to allow the sun to enter the home during the winter and warm it's interior.

Shading

The south facing windows should be shaded in the summer months to prevent overheating.  This can be naturally done with deciduous trees or properly sized roof overhangs.  All the Solar Series plans are designed to incorporate shading by roof overhangs.  Charts are provided to adjust the overhang size for the local latitude.
